Issue #234: December 1, 2009

• Kelsey Grammer returns to Broadway on April 18 when he plays the nightclub owner in the revival of La Cage aux Folles at the Longacre Theater.

• Keeping with the revival theme, Denzel Washington will also be returning to Broadway in the spring in August Wilson’s Fences.

• Another revival opens this spring with the staging of Sondheim on Sondheim with heavy hitter songstresses Barbara Cook and Vanessa Williams headlining.

• The Lincoln Center Theater revival of South Pacific is scheduled to land at Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre from August 12 to September 5.

• New York’s Public Theater will have presence in London in April when super producer Cameron Mackintosh moves the Tony Award-winning revival of Hair to the West End.  What makes this transplant unique is that it will come complete with the entire American cast.

• British actor Edward Woodward may best be known in North America for his role in the television series The Equalizer, however his career began in 1946 onstage and continued for 50 years.  He played Shakespearean roles and had a memorable tenor singing voice recording numerous albums.  His Broadway credits included Noel Coward’s play Blithe Spirit where Mr. Coward directed him.  Woodward died November 16 at the age of 79.
